The Council: Katharine Watts
Katharine Watts
Vice PresidentKatharine Watts, trained in New Zealand and London, is an active performer in recital and oratorio as well as with chamber ensembles such as Calico Jam and for many years the Orlando Singers. Her repertoire ranges from medieval to contemporary. A fluent linguist, she studied and taught languages before becoming a fulltime singer and voice teacher. Her love of words has encouraged her to devise numerous unusual song programmes with an eclectic and often surprising choice of music. With these she has toured nationwide. She is also active as a concert series organiser and school performer. Her studio includes students from beginner to advanced level, and she emphasises developing a sound technique which allows vocal ease and freedom. She has a special interest in the physiology of the voice and in holistic approaches to voice dysfunction. Her belief in the importance of singing teaching has led her to many years of active membership of the NEWZATS Council, where she has served as Vice-President and President, organising numerous national events and conferences, and attending international voice conferences. She contributes regularly to New Zealand and Australian journals on singing, and is in demand as a masterclass teacher, choral voice coach and adjudicator.
